低放射性核废料在处理起来较为简单，主要是经过焚化压缩固化后，装进大型金属罐，以便在浅地层中掩埋。目前，国际上处理高放射性核废料的方式主要有“再处理”和“直接处置”两种选择。“再处理”主要是从核废料中回收可进行再利用的核原料，包括提取可制造核武器的钚等。“直接处置”则是指将高放射性废料进行“地下埋藏”，一般经过冷却(AP1000核废料清理泵)、干式储存、*终处置三个阶段。美国政府一直采取地下掩埋的措施来处理核废料。在内华达州北部的丝兰山脉，已有1.1万个30―80吨的处理罐被埋在地下几百米深处的隧道里。
